So if I want to run a slightly hotter plug in my Z1B 900, stock is B8ES how about running a B7ES? Thoughts?

Ed, Higher the number colder the plug , hence B9ES is colder than B7ES.
Higher the number shorter / stubbier the insulation the insulation electrode nose. More insulation..Cooler the plug.
Plugs that become black and shiny (oily) require a hotter plug eg. a B7ES .
Plugs that become white (too hot) require a colder plug eg a B9ES.

I think Carb adjustments should be done first! Could be running too rich or too lean.

Ed, I have to agree with Garn, I have never used anything but the standard "8" s, I would check everything before changing to hotter plugs.

Thanks to you both! Larry C. offered some excellent thoughts and asdvice to me, one thing he pointed out is that if guides and seals are worn, parking bike on side stand allows oil to "Pool" in head and possibly cause number 1 plug to foul, ^o) so...guess which plug is giving me trouble? :-/ YEP!! Number 1 !!
Larry also reminded me that quite a few bikes run the B7ES plug, so am gonna try them in all cylinders.. ;) .? Or.....should I just put a "7" in number one Cyl?
Hmmmm....choices!!
Thanks Again!!

The issue with 7's is they don't dissipate heat as quickly - if you are running the bike hard you can hole a piston - but I stress it takes some hard riding to do this. They key is to check the plug color after a few hundred miles with the 7's in the bike.

I have run 7's in bikes needing to have valve seal or guides replaced - it does stop the plugs fouling.

I would only run the plugs as a matched set.

For a healthy Z1, I always run B8ES plugs - the only exception are the 9's in my turbo bike.

Some people swear by Champion or ND plugs - I've run both (and still have a bunch of ND plugs in my tool box), but have found no problems with the NGK plugs.

With ND, I've run W24ES-U and W27ES-U plugs a few times - the 24's are similar heat range to the B8ES and the 27's similar to the B9ES.

Will consider all this.

Hi Rob, it's strange how we end up with different opinions on the plugs. I suspect some of the difference is the conditions we ride in - temperature, humidity, etc. I've run NGK, Champion and ND plugs in a number of Z1's and always now select the NGK's over the other brands.

I used to have a graph chart showing the overlap of range - but I'm darned if I can find it now. From memory the Champion N2 and N3 both overlapped the NGK B8ES

Hi Jeff, you are probably right about conditions, and if you find the info on plugs, I would be very interested in reading it. I am always interested in learning, and can't see it ever changing!! 025
